Gordon Walters (1919-95) was a New Zealand painter and graphic designer. He created a new kind of
painting in which Maori motifs and European abstract painting were drawn together. He is best known for his
series based on the Maori 'koru' motif.
Koru is the Maori name given to unfurling ponga tree-fern fronds and symbolises birth, growth, strength, and
renewal. It is an integral symbol in Maori art, often seen in carving, painting and tattooing. Read more about

Gordon Walters’ koru design for the New Zealand Film Commission logo has been enormously influential on
New Zealand graphic design. He also designed the Air New Zealand koru logo, well known by all New

The koru motif is used in many ways today and has come to be a symbol of national identity. Some have even
suggested replacing New Zealand’s current flag with Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s design based on the
