Fanthams Peak is a secondary volcanic cone (1966m) named
after
Fanny Fantham, who in 1887 was the first woman to

National Park
Mt Tasman and Aoraki (Mt Cook)are the two highest peaks in
the
Southern Alps at 3498m and 3754m respectively. Aoraki /
Mount Cook National Park contains 26 named peaks over

Oparara features the characteristic arches, sinkholes and
caves found in water-worn limestone rock, and also has some

Silver beech is the dominant species at this altitude, and the
stunted, gnarled trunks are festooned with hanging moss
which thrives in the prevalent rainfall and mist of the
Tararua

The braided shingle riverbeds of the Poulter River and the
Waimakariri River, which it joins to the south, provide nesting
grounds for birds such as the
wrybill and black-fronted tern.

Pyke Creek flows through beech forest Haast Pass ,
Mount Aspiring National Park
In the north-east corner of the park, Pyke Creek feeds the
Haast River from the slopes of Mt Brewster (2515m) below the
Brewster Glacier. Haast Pass was named after
Julius von

Tussock-covered Dundas Ridge Tararua Forest Park
Above the treeline the tops of the Tararua Range are well-
covered in alpine tussock grasslands, which also shelter the
delicate flowers of many alpine herbs. (Guy Vickers)

Although Mt Ruapehu, to the left of this photo, has experienced
more dramatic eruptions recently,
Mt Ngauruhoe is the most
continuously active of New Zealand‚s volcanoes, regularly
