Auckland is the biggest city in New
Zealand, home to about 1.3 million people,
nearly a third of the
New Zealand
population.

In the Maori language, Auckland is known
as
Tamaki-makau-rau  "the maiden with a
thousand lovers". Maori fought over
Tamaki-makau-rau because they desired
her warm climate, her soft, fertile soil, and
her magnificent harbours filled with
seafood.

The beautiful
Waitemata Harbour is
Auckland's front yard and playground. On
any sunny weekend, the Waitemata is filled
with yachts, their sails billowing in the wind.
That's why Auckland is also called
The City
of Sails.

    Parnell is a favorite
    shopping and dining

Auckland Attractions

Queen Street, High Street, and The Chancery
offer some of the central city's best shopping
experiences, or take a short
bus ride to
Newmarket or Victoria Park Market.

Lively bars and pubs can be found all over the
central city, and dance clubs on
Karangahape
Road, known locally as K Rd. Live music and
theatre are found in large venues such as the
Aotea Centre or small pubs such as The Dog's
Bollix.

Skycity Casino is located in the Skycity complex,
which also has bars, restaurants and a hotel.

The historic inner city suburbs of
Ponsonby,
Herne Bay and Parnell offer dozens of
restaurants and cafes, or try a waterfront
restaurant in the
Viaduct Harbour or Mission Bay.

In just half an hour you can be almost anywhere -
sailing to an island, trekking through a rainforest,
picnicking on a volcano, sampling wines at a
vineyard or wandering a wild, black sand surf
beach.
